Instagrams of the Week: Sights of East Africa

January 22, 2016 Mark Bonington

Africa is all about blazing trails, and in East Africa, you’ll find a never-ending supply. Walk the footsteps of the world’s first humans. Scale the peaks of the continent’s highest mountain. Witness enough animals and birds to satisfy even the most ardent curiosity for wildlife viewing. (Wanderlust refers specifically to travelling and nothing more).

Welcome to adventure’s last great frontier. Take in this taster of what East Africa has to offer. (Simplified this a bit)

Traveller @the.impulse.to.travel came face to face with a female gorilla in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

@stianfjereide captured this view over the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. This natural wonder was formed 2-3m years ago when a volcano exploded and collapsed on itself.

Lionesses prowl the Serengeti in search of their next meal. In sub-Saharan Africa, lions are a key apex predator. Living together in prides, it is the lionesses who do the bulk of the hunting. This picture comes courtesy of @satiya72.

This elephant was spotted by @kwatosafaris_mike on Safari in Kenya. These mammals are highly social and can live to be over 70 years old.

Kilimanjaro has three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Here is Kibo, the highest of the three, snapped by our own @jeffreygarriock.
