Recommended by G: The best food carts in New Zealand

January 3, 2018

One of the best things about going on a G Adventures trip is meeting our tour leaders — we call them CEOs (Chief Experience Officers), since they're so integral to the G experience. Not are our CEOs equipped with all the knowledge and know-how to help you get the best out of our tours — they can also recommend some of the best locals-only hotspots for amazing eats. With that in mind, we asked CEOs from some of the regions to which we travel to give us their top picks for great food in their respective countries of origin. First up: the most mouth-watering food carts from New Zealand, courtesy of CEO Levi Dwan.

1. Black Stag Streetfood

The food-truck iteration of Black Stag catering serves up such meaty goodness as sausages, grilled salmon and chargrilled, blistered hot peppers — all piping hot — at events and occasions across Auckland. blackstagdeli.com

2. The White Lady

Established in 1948, The White Lady has been serving up burgers, toasties, and shakes to Auckland's hungry masses for decades — and now operates out of a mobile food cart for catering. thewhitelady.co.nz

3. Mama Tahina

Since 2014, Mama Tahina has been serving up fresh, healthful Mediterranean food on the go. Think: lamb burgers, couscous cakes, and falafels. manatahina.co.nz

4. Mr. Shankly’s

This one's for the vegans: Mr. Shankly's dishes up meat- and dairy-free fare, such as Thai noodle soup, dumplings, and porridge out of its food cart in Auckland. instagram.com/mr_shanklys

6. Fat Tui

This food cart in Nelson does one thing really, really well: flavourful, juicy, burgers. And these are no ordinary 'burgs: The Muss, for instance, is a patty made of fresh mussels. facebook.com/the-fat-tui

8. Burrito Craft

This Wanaka food cart specializes in burritos, but that's not all they have on the menu. There are also tacos, burrito bowls, and — of course — tortilla chips with guac. burritocraft.co.nz

9. Taco Medic

These unconventional tacos are just what the doctor ordered. Queenstown's Taco Medic offers Kiwi spins on the Mexican classic, including The Bushman, a taco loaded with suckling pork, or the Stockman, which is pilled high with New Zealand-raised beef seasoned with chipotle. http://tacomedic.co.nz
