The vast ice oceans of the Arctic may look intimidating, but there’s more to this desolate landscape than meets the eye. From freezing ocean depths to windswept cliffs, animal species have found unique ways to thrive in this unforgiving environment – whether thanks to thick fur, finding a good nook to burrow down in or just enjoying a friendly cuddle.
But animals aren’t the only surprises waiting for you here. The monochromatic landscapes, bleached white with snow and ice, will leave their indelible mark on each traveller to make the journey.
Winter might be coming, but in the Arctic it’s here to stay.
And first, here’s the real king in the north! Traveller @kateandsheba sighted this polar bear in Svalbard. Despite their fearsome reputation, this one looks remarkably calm.
Our own @schled captures the icy Svalbard landscape. This archipelago lies halfway between Norway and the North Pole and is an excellent spot to see the Northern Lights.
A zodiac floats on the glassy waters around Magdalena Fjord in Spitsbergen. You can view a variety of aquatic life beneath the waves here, including whales, dolphins, seals and walruses.
Speaking of walrus, here’s a group enjoying a communal cuddle to stay warm, as seen onboard the @g_expedition.
Our own @stu_aussie snapped this puffin as it sped past in Svalbard. When not rushing by on the wing, these birds like to bunk down in holes and crevices along the cliffs of Svalbard.
