Whether it’s getting lost in the streets of Cartagena or exploring the fabled Lost City, there’s never been a better time to visit Colombia. We sent our Wanderers-in-Residence Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott for a taste of what this incredible land has to offer. Fresh coffee, Caribbean beaches and valleys in the clouds; check out these snapshots of their journey.
Colombian coffee country in the hills of the central branch of the Andes. A visit to a coffee farm in Quindio provides us with an inside look at what goes into making our favourite morning drink, from planting to harvesting to roasting. Interesting coffee factoid of the day: 100kg (220 lbs) of coffee berries = 13kg (29 lbs) of roasted coffee beans.
Morning hike through the cloud forest of the Cocora Valley, dotted with wax palms that can reach over 60m (197 ft) in height. We can understand why so many people told us this was their favourite place in Colombia.
Cabo San Juan, our Caribbean beach reward after a morning trek through the tropical forest of Tayrona National Park. And yes, the water is just as refreshing as it looks.
Back streets of Cartagena’s Old Town. This colourful UNESCO site has kept much of its colonial architecture and feel, making it a popular stop along Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The streets always seem to be full of action with musicians, dancers, fruit vendors, horse-drawn carriages, and a general Caribbean beat. It’s easy to get pleasantly lost here.
Looking down from the upper terraces of Teyuna (the "Lost City") on a ridge in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Not much is known about this place, but it is believed to have been built by the Tayrona civilization in AD 800, some 600 years before Machu Picchu in Peru. Reaching the Lost City requires a 46km (29 mi) round-trip trek through tropical forests, across rivers and up 1,200 stone stairs. It was a challenging trek, but one that exceeded our expectations in so many ways.
