On the shores of Guatemala’s Lake Atitlán is San Juan La Laguna, a small, picturesque village, home to the Maya Tz’utujil people. This magical place lies at the foot of green mountains and is one of the few places in the region that maintains its native language and traditions. It is also here that Planeterra Foundation has developed one of the most successful projects of the region.
Magical San Juan La Laguna.
Despite all the natural and cultural richness San Juan offers, there are few jobs to be had here. The town could embrace a more modern way of life and try selling more mainstream products, but instead they’re promoting their own culture, keeping intact what makes them different and unique. When G Adventures and Planeterra came to the area, we analyzed the potential for tourism in the region to better understand the needs of the people in San Juan La Laguna, and how we could act on those needs.
We began by helping establish the Posadas Mayas – a homestay project that benefits over 20 households directly. These local families receive weekly visitors to their homes and some are even employed as tour guides for visitors. It’s an amazing opportunity for travellers to get to know the local culture and people.
Like with all Planeterra-supported communities, micro-enterprises get created. One such spinoff here is El Nuevo Sol, (‘new sun’), developed by a well-known Mayan spiritual guide, María Feliciana Ujpan. This initiative offers relaxing massages and traditional Mayan healing ceremonies alongside the amazing Lake Atitlán. It’s a beautiful opportunity to learn more about Mayan spirituality and traditions, and reap good energy to continue your trip.
Another Planeterra-supported initiative is the Gloria Cholotio Art Gallery. Cholotio’s paintings, which she’s been creating since age 15, have allowed her to be the sole source of financial support for her family since her husband passed away. Her gallery is now the ideal place for visitors to buy a beautiful souvenir of San Juan La Laguna.
Cholotio has been painting the scenes of San Juan since she was 15 years old.
Take home a souvenir of the region that helps to support the community.

Just as every country has their big cities and must-see attractions, you can’t come to Guatemala and skip a visit to magical San Juan La Laguna. It will give you a glimpse of true sustainable tourism practices and welcome you into a highly valued and traditional way of life. Those who live here are only too happy to share with you their hospitality and culture.
