The Dongdaemun Design Plaza forms the central nucleus of Seoul’s fashion district. It’s curving, ultramodern exterior reflects South Korea’s stance as a leader in global innovation.
But supporting the rooftop walkways, retail stores and exhibition spaces are restored sections of the Fortress Wall of Seoul. This was constructed in 1396 during the Joseon Dynasty to defend the ancient city, then called Hanyang.
Today the two exist in harmonious balance under one roof, pushing South Korea forward into a new age of modernism while looking back to a proud past.
