Visual Adventure: Greek Islands Sailing

April 2, 2014 Kathy Meresz

Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of the landscape of the Greek Islands. Year after year, my wall calendar always featured images of whitewashed houses with contrasting cobalt-blue doors and shutters, and rows of red geraniums perched along terraces overlooking the aquamarine kaleidoscope of the Aegean Sea. I thought of a place so pristine, magical, and more beautiful than any other that I could imagine.

You know the danger that sometimes comes when you build a place up in your mind so much that reality can never live up to your dreams? Well, the Greek Islands are not like that. When I finally made it to them, it was every bit as beautiful and charming as I had imagined.

Each island has its own unique personality, and by sailing around, we had the chance to experience those personalities up-close. There was plenty of time to wander off into the labyrinthine cobblestone streets of the port towns we docked at, and doing so provides a variety of rewards; stumbling upon a charming café or restaurant where you can enjoy a gastronomic feast, or perhaps finding an unexpected lookout that offers a breathtaking view of the town below and the sea beyond. If you venture inland on the islands, you’ll discover landscapes of rolling hills and olive trees, tiny villages, and countless churches, often perched precariously atop the hills.

Here is a collection of images from my trip:
