Not so long ago, the mention of Croatia would have drawn blank stares. Today, travel magazines are tripping over themselves to proclaim Croatia the next [insert superlative here]. After spending over a month on the road in Europe, it is safe to say I now understand why.

Fact is, the country’s status as an Adriatic playground was simply on recess during the Balkan civil war. The azure waters and countless coves of the Dalmatian Coast remain a yachtsman’s dream, while medieval Zagreb and UNESCO-protected Dubrovnik ooze romance as much as ever.

Yes—for Old World charm and ancient splendour, it’s hard to beat Croatia. Now imagine living there like the locals do—with full access to local wine and olive oil, a farm villa to reside in, and day trips to Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea among other legendary locales.

This past summer, I was lucky enough to have done just that, sharing a rustic villa with sweeping views of the Konavle Valley and the Adriatic Sea with a few other G Adventures travellers on a Local Living tour. The Mujo Family were our hosts—they lived just next door— and lived to share their culture with our group.

The Mujo Family were such amazing hosts, greeting us with open arms and warm smiles as we made lunch shortly after our arrival and showed me around their property. After sampling local wines and tasting the local olive oil, I was able to lounge by the pool overlooking the valley and the Adriatic.

The best part of my stay? The hands-on cooking classes!

After walking, biking, and sailing all over Dubrovnik, our little rustic villa was a welcome retreat in the evening. The terrace served as great venue for morning tea and some downtime after meals. The best part of my stay? The hands-on cooking classes! I personally love the thought of cooking but unfortunately don’t always have time to experiment in the kitchen. A few days with the Mujo Family has really made me appreciate a good meal! They were very patient and passionate about their food! For me, this trip was a perfect balance between relaxation and adventure.
