In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, G Adventures is proud to launch a new campaign that will help impact the lives of women around world. Planeterra Foundation hopes to raise USD $25,000 for three new G Adventures for Good social initiatives.
We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off such an exciting campaign than with a photography exhibit showcasing images of women involved in the global travel industry. PLANET Her is a celebration of travel’s potential as a catalyst for female empowerment, a source of connection, and a force for good in the world. The exhibit runs in Berlin from March 8 to 13, 2016.
If you’re unable to visit in person, we invite you to check out a sample from our gallery featuring photographs by Wanderers-in-Residence Daniel Noll and Audrey Scott, writers and storytellers of Uncornered Market, as well as some of our very own photographers from G Adventures.
1. On Her Way Home from School
Location: Mare Rouge, Haiti
“A greeting is your passport.” This is a popular Haitian proverb we applied often throughout our travels in Haiti, from city streets to rural mountain areas. When we said “hello” in the local creyol to this girl on her way home from school in the Chaîne de la Selle Mountains, she greeted us in return. She showed us her schoolbooks and proudly told us in French, the language in which she studies, about her school and her favorite subjects. Shy maybe, but certainly confident.
2. Witness
Location: Farakka, West Bengal, India
An elderly woman sits on the curb near her home in the town of Farakka.
3. A Mountain Ginger Harvest
Location: Kalaw, Myanmar
4. On the Afghan Border, A Pamiri Gaze
Location: Pamir Mountains (Ishkashim), Tajikistan
These two women sell vegetables at the local market in the Pamir Mountain village of Ishkashim, Tajikistan, just across the river from Afghanistan. This area does not get much tourist traffic. The women were interested to have their photos taken – together. Try as we might, we couldn’t get them to break their serious look for the camera. That’s the look they wanted. But once we showed them the images on the screen of our DSLR, out came their true selves as they broke into big laughs.
5. Girl Group
Location: Pushkar, Rajasthan, India
A trio of women in colourful Rajasthani silks pose on a Pushkar street. They spend their days singing for donations in front of the market district’s storefronts.
6. Keeping It Light
Location: Hoi An, Vietnam
7. Two for Seven Dollars, That’s My Price
Location: Otavalo, Ecuador
8. At the Political Rally
Location: Tupiza, Bolivia
9. The Arab Spring in Egypt: The Market Must Go On
Location: Alexandria, Egypt
10. Driving Force
Location: New Delhi, India
Women train to become commercial chauffeurs for Women on Wheels, a project co-sponsored by G Adventures and the Azad Foundation.
11. Warm Welcome
Location: San Juan La Laguna, Sololá, Guatemala
A smiling homestay host welcomes visitors to her home near Lake Atitlán. Homestays connect travellers directly to the culture and daily life of their surroundings while providing local homeowners with an opportunity to support their families and strengthen communities.
12. Building a Home-Based Business
Location: Masaya, Nicaragua
Angela took a small loan financed through Kiva.org. She uses her credit to buy products in bulk so she can improve the margins in the shop she runs out of a home she shares with her family in a village outside Masaya, Nicaragua.
Note: Part of a microfinance project with Kiva.org.
13. Every Cheer Counts
Location: Gracias, Honduras
