From the Nazca Lines to the Inca Trail, Peru offers a wide, wonderful variety of outdoor attractions to discover and explore. But there are perhaps none so striking for their natural beauty than the Rainbow Mountains: bright, striped, multicoloured marvels of geologic formation. Believed to be sacred by the ancient Incas, the Rainbow Mountains are actually coloured the way they are — in vertical stripes ranging from deep red to bright turquoise — due to the deposit of different minerals at different times; the sediment was eventually turned sideways by tectonic activity, exposing the remarkable stripes.
