Go solo-ish: a new way to travel on your own

October 14, 2024

Ever feel like your freedom and desire to explore the world rarely lines up with your travel buddies? You are not alone. A big part of our very existence is helping solo travellers, especially women, get out there to see and experience every corner of our planet. Sure, you can strike out on your own but a small group gives you enough structure, guidance, and safety to truly enjoy each place. And now — we’re kicking it up a notch with the next evolution of solo group travel: Solo-ish Adventures.

Unlike our other trips, these tours are designed for solo travellers only, aged 18 and up. Each adventure is crafted with community at its core and includes plenty of me-time, group time, and quality time with local communities. You’ll get closer to your group-mates right off the bat at a dinner party and see the world with a local female Chief Experience Officer (CEO) leading the way. All you need to decide is your destination and luckily we’ve got a few choice ideas to consider.

Zip out on your own in Costa Rica

What you’ll love: What’s not to love about this Central American gem? Peaceful. Friendly. Incredibly biodiverse. Costa Rica is big on adventure (like rappelling down a waterfall!) and a welcoming place to explore by yourself. Head off from the group to commune with capuchin monkeys, opt to zipline in the cloud forest on your Monteverde Me Day, or laze on the white-sand beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park.

How we help: Even if your Spanish skills are lacking, you’ll find that Costa Ricans light up if you even try a poquito (small bit) of their language. Your CEO can bridge gaps and set you in the right direction for free time adventuring. Having that connection in your back pocket is peace of mind as you open yourself up to the local people, places, and experiences.

Make new pals in South Africa

What you’ll love: By every standard, South Africa is a stunner. Endless skies. Copious wildlife. Flavourful dishes. It’s easy to fall in love here whether it’s with the people you meet or the taste of potato Malay curry made together at a cooking class in Bo-Kaap. Easy connection with the local people is baked into farm-to-table lunches, community tourism activities, or starlit bush dinners.

How we help: A natural camaraderie grows through shared experience so don’t be surprised if you become besties with your fellow solo travellers. Maybe it’ll be the easy laughter around a Boma campfire and traditional meal that creates a lasting friendship. Lots of our travellers stay in touch long after the magic of spotting African wildlife and tastings at famed vineyards together.

Let us transport you to Vietnam

What you’ll love: Women-led motorbike tours! Overnight junk boat cruises! Cycling through the Red Kingdom in the Mekong Delta! All routes taken in Vietnam lead to sights that'll blow your mind. If there’s a fun way to get around, we’ve got you covered including your arrival transfer at the airport. Plus, we’ve got plenty of ways to leave the hustle and bustle with early morning Tai Chi sessions, a Me Day in Hoi An, and serene bike rides through rice fields.

How we help: Vietnam isn’t short on natural wonders but typically involves a few long (but scenic!) drives, boat, or train rides. Leave the navigation and watching the road to local experts as you can take in passing landscapes. With transportation off your plate, all of your energy is saved for eating oodles of noodles and the many excursions along the way.

Broaden your horizons in China

What you’ll love: Solo travellers are often driven by a thirst for worldly knowledge and what better place to quench it than in China? Whether you’re into food, photography, culture, or history — you can pursue them all as you navigate the highlights from Shanghai to Beijing. Learn to cook dumplings in Jinshanling, wander the poetic lantern-lined Dongguan Street, and begin the day in Shanghai with an extra special surprise activity with your group-mates. Spoiler alert: there’s one of the latter on every Solo-ish Adventure!

How we help: With your CEO’s guidance, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the local way of life and rich history of each place. She’ll point you to yummy breakfast staples like da bing (sesame scallion bread), teach you all she knows about the Terracotta Warriors in Xi-an, and lead your fact-filled trek along the Great Wall. How much you want to learn is always up to you and she’ll understand when you need to recharge your social battery.

Feel perfectly at ease in Morocco

What you’ll love: Morocco is rife with exciting places to wander like labyrinthine medinas, ancient kasbahs, and spice-filled souks. But we know that what is energizing to some is chaotic to others so we’re big on the built-in buddy system of small group solo travel. Enjoy the vibrant colours and cacophony of noise knowing you have a local expert paving the way and setting you up for safe solo excursions.

How we help: As with any place you’ve never been, it can be overwhelming to understand the ins and outs of a country or culture outside your own. Our CEOs are there to advise on everything from local dress etiquette to tipping norms to personal health and safety. All of their expertise makes for a more relaxed experience so you can enjoy buggy safaris in the desert, treks through Todra Gorge, and story-filled cooking classes in Casablanca.
