Books are magic. They transport us to places we’ve never been, introduce us to people we’d never meet, teach us to cook and to speak new languages, and tell stories from the past that shed light on the present. You can learn a lot from books. And if you read the right ones, you can even learn something about yourself.

Destination-based reading lists

Travelling is a lot like reading, and at G Adventures, we’re big fans of both. We’ve partnered up with the fine folks at Kobo to bring you a new destination-based reading list each month. Head on over to our page and see what’s up.

This month’s featured destination is a big one: Africa. The story of this continent is best told in person, but until you can get there yourself, books are a great way to understand what makes this fascinating place tick.

For first-hand insight, try personal memoirs written by locals (Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is positively gripping) and visitors (Kuki Gallmann’s I Dreamed of Africa) alike. Fictional works, like Chinua Achebe’s ground-breaking Things Fall Apart and Barbara Kingsolver’s Poisonwood Bible, refract Africa’s story through the prism of different characters and unique experiences. And there’s so much history to wrap your head around here, James Michener’s The Covenant, a historical novel about the formation of South Africa, and Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom are basically required reading.

While an extensive reading list is certainly a bonus, you can’t cart around a library while you’re travelling. That’s where e-readers come in handy. Don’t have one yet? We might be able to hook you up. In celebration of the Kobo partnership, we’re giving away a brand-new Kobo Aura to one lucky reader. Sleek, lightweight, and compact, the Aura is a dependable travelling companion capable of storing up to 30,000 eBooks and displaying them on a bright 6” high-res screen.

To enter, simply fill out the form at the bottom of this post. We’ll pick one entry at random on August 16, 2014. You can only enter once, but the contest is open to anyone anywhere in the world.

We’ll post a new reading list for a new destination each month over at the G Adventures Kobo page, so be sure to check it out. Want to know more about Kobo? Find ‘em on Facebook and Pinterest, and follow @kobo on Twitter. Your planet is a page-turner, and it re-writes itself every day.
