A country where the ancient past lives on in every rock and around every turn in the trail, Egypt is a history lesson come to life. Like a theme park of temples, pyramids, and tombs, the country has stood as a monument to the imagination for centuries and provides a great viewpoint from which to study and understand Western civilization. Little wonder then that Egypt has awoken the explorer within so many over the years, and that it continues to attract explorers from all over the world.

Standing before the Great Pyramid of Giza in 1798, Napoleon declared to his army, “From the heights of these pyramids, forty centuries look down on us.” So awestruck by the weight of history was he that 500 specialists of all fields accompanied him to complete the first-ever overseas archaeological dig. As news reached home, mysticism of this antediluvian world grew and launched a rush of explorers to Egypt who, over the next century, virtually gave birth to the discipline of archaeology.

Discoveries made during this time, such as the Rosetta Stone – the basis from which all understanding of hieroglyphs flows – have fuelled our collective passion. Today, it is one of the most visited objects in any museum anywhere in the world.

Modern Egypt is a country confident in its new future and proud of its past. Visiting Egypt today, it’s easy to get swept up in the magic that stirred those original adventurers. Scan the vista of Giza; approach the vast complexes of Karnak, Luxor, and Hapshepsut like a pioneer, and explore the Valley of the Kings’ tombs who lie still, waiting for your discovery.
