Welcome to the sparkling blue of the Adriatic. Sailing Croatia and island hopping through this stunning region definitely one for the bucket list. This country is home to some of the most spectacular coastline Europe has to offer, with over 1,000 islands surrounded by its crystal clear waters. So join me and my camera, as we take on Croatia!
I’ve always been close to the water. I grew up swimming, fishing and paddling a canoe. So, for me, a sailing trip was a no-brainer. I spent my first night in the old city of Dubrovnik, which is a must if you plan on visiting Croatia. I was able to spend the next eight days cooking meals on the yacht with the group, swimming each day in a different bay and walking every evening in a historic port I’d never seen before.
The boat itself was a spacious 50-foot sailing yacht with four cabins and three bathrooms with showers. We lucked out with perfect weather for most of the trip except for one rainy day, which gave all of us the opportunity to learn how to sail during wet conditions. Our skipper Teo was a great teacher and taught us the ropes about how to set sail, move with the wind and anchor. This hands-on experience really piqued my interest and allowed me to help out on deck throughout our trip.
One of my favourite experiences was being able to cook a fresh meal. Croatia is said to have the best seafood in all of Europe. On our daily swims we caught fresh fish, brought them back to the boat and prepared our very own lunches and dinners. After exploring the various ports and towns, we would return to the boat, grab a glass of wine, put on some music and have a relaxing evening under the stars. In all, sailing is full of adventure and relaxation and is a unique way to see any country. I can’t recommend it enough as the perfect way to explore Croatia.
